Age Old Sea Cow Fossil Found in Palawan

When it comes to national issues in line with nature, the Philippines has a lot of ‘issues’ kept in various provinces here. If you will talk about Philippine biodiversity, some of the places in Palawan will surely amaze you. Basically, this island in the western part of the Philippines has a lot to boast of – and some are way too wonderful that can even be considered as features that you can show off internationally. This is no lie because a lot of geologists and other people who specialize in studies about nature are investing their time in this country. Why is that, you think? It’s because these professionals are aware that Philippines is a very rich country ever since – and that’s in terms of natural resources. If only there are Filipinos who are as passionate as those foreign discoverers, there will surely be a lot of explorations in this nation.

Just recently, a geologist named Leonardo Piccini of the University of Florence made a ground-breaking exploration. His adventure paid off when he discovered a 20-million year old fossil that resembles to the bone structure of a sea cow. The fossil was unearthed on the Island province of Palawan. In the description, the geologist found a fossil that contained a spine with a few ribs embedded in a rock. The rock was discovered in a cave, near the underground rivers.

It’s nice to know that after millions of years of studies and exploration, people who poured out their passion, investment in money and time got one of the best gifts they can have – a fossil discovery. However, it’s also disappointing to know that the discoverer of the fossil was not a Filipino but a person of different nationality. This is not a subjective article but if you will take a look at the broader side, you will realize how some of the Filipinos here are not concerned about the nature. Just think about this, it even took a foreign geologist a short span of time to discover those bones while the people who live near that cave took a lifetime and yet, they weren’t able to find that fossil. Please be reminded that this article is not pertaining Filipinos in general.

People should be proud that such age-old things are still found in this country but this event should also be a wake-up call for everyone. Filipinos should not let foreign people take the credit of discovering ancient things which Pinoys are supposed to have discovered earlier. Right?
